...The frequency of multiple births is expressed by the Herrin formula, which states that n fetuses occur once for every 80 ^{n -1} single births. Monozygotic twins, which are produced from one fertilized egg, occur in 0.3-0.4% of births, with little difference between races, but dizygotic twins, which are produced from two fertilized eggs, vary considerably between races, from 1.3-0.3%. In Japan, dizygotic twins are rare, at 0.3%.
