〘noun〙① One of the sail riggings of a Japanese ship. A hemp rope stretched from port to starboard on the stern side of the mast, with a large cross ring corresponding to the number of turns of the sail attached to it, used to fasten the bottom of the spread sail. Large mawashi rope. [Wakan Senyoshu (1766)]② To look over something roughly. Owatari Owatari [Owatari]

The name of a place located at the confluence of the Kizu River and the Yodo River (Uji River) between Yawata City and Oyamazaki Town in the southwestern tip of Kyoto Prefecture. An ancient battlefield where Nitta Yoshisada was defeated by Ashikaga Takauji in 1335. *Taiheiki (late 14th century ) 14: "At Owatari, Nitta Sahyoe no Kami Yoshisada was the general commander, and the Kawachi army was fortified with over 10,000 soldiers."

〘名〙① 和船の帆装具の一つ。帆柱の艫側に左舷から右舷にかけ渡す麻綱で、これに帆の反(たん)数に応じた大渡し鐶(かん)をつけて帆足をむすびつけ、ひろげた帆のすそをとめるもの。大廻し縄。〔和漢船用集(1766)〕② 大まかに目を通すこと。細部に立ち入らないで一通りですますこと。※寛永刊本蒙求抄(1529頃)五「疎通、そさうに学文をしたぞ。大わたしに学をするぞ」

おおわたり おほわたり【大渡】

京都府南西端、八幡市と大山崎町の間、木津川と淀川(宇治川)の合流点にあった地名。建武二年(一三三五)新田義貞が足利尊氏に敗れた古戦場。※太平記(14C後)一四「大渡(ヲホワタリ)には新田左兵衛督義貞を惣大将として〈略〉河内の兵共一万余騎にて堅めたり」
