French conductor. He studied flute and conducting at the Paris Conservatoire. He made his debut at the Opera House in his hometown of Rouen. He was the principal conductor of the Orchestre National de Radio France from 1941, and music director of the Opéra Comique in Paris from 1944 to 1957. He first came to Japan in 1958, and conducted the Japanese premiere of Debussy's "Pelléas et Mélisande." He worked mainly in the Netherlands in the 1960s, and returned to Japan in 1973 to become the first music director of the newly established Orchestre d'Île-de-France, a position he held until 1982.
