Japanese: 原子記号 - げんしきごう

Symbols that indicate the type of atom. For example, hydrogen atoms are represented by H, carbon atoms by C, oxygen atoms by O, etc. They were originally simply used as symbols for various elements, so they are also called element symbols. These symbols not only indicate the respective element, but also represent one atom or one mole of that element. When indicating atoms of isotopes, the mass number is written on ^the left ^shoulder as ^16O ^, ^18O , ^17O , etc.

原子の種類を表示する記号。たとえば水素原子はH，炭素原子はC，酸素原子はOなどを用いて表す。初めは単に各種元素の記号として用いたので元素記号ともいう。これらの記号は，それぞれの元素であることを表すほか，その元素の原子一つあるいは１モルをも意味する。同位元素の原子を示す場合には，その左肩に質量数を示し，¹⁶O，¹⁸O，¹⁷Oなどと書く。
