The functional relationship between the two alleles present in a heterozygote can be codominant, as seen between the I ^A and I ^B genes, dominant-recessive, as seen between the I ^A (or I ^B ) and i genes, or incomplete dominance, in which the phenotype of the heterozygote is intermediate between the homozygotes of both genes. When a red-flowering plant is crossed with a white-flowering plant, the heterozygote often produces pink flowers; this is an example of incomplete dominance.
