A chemical reaction is a reaction that absorbs heat as it progresses. In contrast, a reaction that generates heat is called an exothermic reaction. When a chemical reaction occurs at a constant temperature from an original system to a product system, a reaction that must absorb heat from the outside to complete the reaction is an endothermic reaction. If the energy of a system is expressed in enthalpy (heat content), the enthalpy H of the system increases by the amount of heat absorption ( ΔH ＞0).

化学反応が進行するにつれて、熱を吸収する反応をいう。これに対し、熱を発生する反応を発熱反応という。化学反応が一定の温度の下で原系から生成系へとおこる場合、反応を完結させるために外部から熱量を吸収しなければならない反応が吸熱反応である。系のエネルギーをエンタルピー（熱含量）で表せば、この吸熱部分だけ系のエンタルピーHは増加する（ΔH＞0）。

などがその例である。一般に吸熱反応は自然にはおこりにくいので、温度を上げて反応を進める必要がある。この吸熱反応が可逆反応で、それが平衡に達したとき、平衡定数は温度が上昇するとともに増加する。
