Part of Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture. In 1959, it merged with Tanabu Town to form Ominato Tanabu City, and the following year it became Mutsu City. The Ominato Line runs through the area, and with Mount Kamabuse behind it and Ominato Bay in front, it is a natural harbor with a naval base and developed as a military port. 青森県むつ市の一部。1959年田名部(たなぶ)町と合併し大湊田名部市となり,翌年むつ市となった。大湊線が通じ,背後に釜臥(かまぶせ)山を負い,前に大湊湾を控える天然の良港で,海軍要港部が置かれ,軍港として発展した。現在,海上自衛隊の基地がある。
