Doggett, T.

[history]
Boats rowed by oars existed in ancient Egypt, and galleys were built in the Greek and Roman periods, but the first recorded instance of rowing as a sport was a boat race organized by Aeneas, described in Virgil's Aeneid. Modern races began as rowing contests held by professional rowers employed by aristocrats on the River Thames in England in the 16th and 17th centuries, and in 1716, comedian Thomas Doggett (?-1721) is known to have founded a race between London Bridge and Chelsea to commemorate the accession of George I. The prize (money) was an orange coat with a silver crest (badge), and this is still held today as Doggett's Coat and Badge race, with single sculls.
