A port city in southeastern Virginia, USA. Population 179,000 (1994). Located at the mouth of the James River at the entrance to Chesapeake Bay, it is an important port for North Atlantic shipping and domestic waterway traffic. It is an export port for tobacco, automobiles, lumber, pulp, grain, coal, etc. Industries include shipbuilding, metals, building materials, and seafood processing. Settlement began in 1620, and the town developed after it was connected to Richmond by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in 1880.
