[Insect fossils]
The oldest insect fossil is a tiny collembolan fossil called Rhyniella , discovered in a Middle Devonian stratum in Rhynie, Scotland, and is said to have no fundamental differences from modern collembolans. However, current knowledge indicates that collembolans have a body plan quite different from that of ordinary insects, and it is difficult to consider them the ancestors of winged insects. Rather, it is thought that winged insects arose from wingless insects similar to worms and silverfish, but the fossils of such insects have not yet been found.
