Katakura Kojuro

Japanese: 片倉小十郎 - かたくらこじゅうろう

A senior vassal of the Date clan of the Sendai domain. Kojuro was a hereditary name, but Kagetsuna (1557-1615) was more famous, and encouraged Date Masamune to take part in the Odawara campaign when Toyotomi Hideyoshi punished Oshu, thus ensuring the revival of the Date clan as a modern daimyo. He firmly refused an invitation to become an independent daimyo, and instead took up Shiroishi Castle, an exceptional measure allowing only one castle per province, with a fief of 13,000 koku. His ancestors lived in Katakura Village, Ina County, Shinano Province, and are said to have followed the Osaki clan down to Oshu. 仙台藩伊達氏の重臣。小十郎は世襲名だが景綱(1557‐1615)が著名で，豊臣秀吉の奥州仕置に際し伊達政宗の小田原参陣を推進，近世大名としての伊達氏再生を決定づけた。独立大名化の誘いを固辞，一国一城の例外的措置である白石（しろいし）城にあって1万3000石を領した。先祖は信濃国伊那郡片倉村に住し，大崎氏に従い奥州に下ったと伝える。伊達氏一家格で，以降しばしば奉行職などの重職に任じた。【難波信雄】
