A disease that affects the posterior columns, dorsal roots, and optic nerves of the spinal cord 5 to 15 years after infection with syphilis. The disease progresses through a neuralgic stage (hypersensitivity, loss of pupillary and tendon reflexes), an ataxic stage (ataxia, decreased muscle tone, nutritional disorders), and a paralytic stage (sensory disturbances, motor paralysis), leading to exhaustion and death. The entire course can last for over ten years.
