Onishi Jourin

Japanese: 大西浄林 - おおにしじょうりん

1590-1663 A kettle maker in the early Edo period.
Born in 1581. First head of the Onishi family in Kyoto. During the Kanei era, he made tea kettles at the Sanjo Kamanza in Kyoto. His works were in the Ashiya style, characterized by vivid patterns. Some of his works used sketches by Kano Tan'yu. He passed away on October 27, 1590. He was 74 years old. He was from Yamashiro (Kyoto Prefecture). His surname was originally Hirose. He was commonly known as Nihei.

1590－1663　江戸時代前期の釜師。
天正(てんしょう)18年生まれ。京都大西家の初代。寛永のころ京都三条釜座(かまんざ)で茶の湯釜をつくった。作品は蘆屋(あしや)風で,鮮明な地文を特徴とした。狩野探幽(かのう-たんゆう)の下絵をもちいたものがある。寛文3年10月27日死去。74歳。山城(京都府)出身。姓ははじめ広瀬。通称は仁兵衛。
