1804 or 01-87 Lebanese journalist and Arab nationalist. Born into a Maronite Christian family, his ideological turning point came when his younger brother converted to Protestantism and died in prison. He became non-sectarian, was exiled and went to Europe. In Paris, he published a book criticizing the religious world, modelled on Rabelais, proving the intellectual power of the Arabic language. He was invited to Tunis and later to Istanbul, where he published an Arabic newspaper, publishing translations of political and diplomatic documents and publishing various social critiques.
