Lebanese journalist and Arab nationalist. Born into a Maronite Christian family, his ideological turning point came when his younger brother converted to Protestantism and died in prison. He became non-sectarian, was exiled and went to Europe. In Paris, he published a book criticizing the religious world, modelled on Rabelais, proving the intellectual power of the Arabic language. He was invited to Tunis and later to Istanbul, where he published an Arabic newspaper, publishing translations of political and diplomatic documents and publishing various social critiques.

レバノン出身の新聞人，アラブ民族主義者。マロン派キリスト教徒の家に生まれるが，実弟がプロテスタントに改宗して獄死したのが思想的転機となる。脱宗派的になり，追放されてヨーロッパに行く。パリでラブレーにならった宗教界批判の書を刊行してアラビア語の思想的表現力をみずから立証した。チュニスのちにはイスタンブールに招かれてアラビア語の新聞を発行，政治･外交関係文書の翻訳を掲載したり各種の社会批評をも展開した。
