Tsukinowa Tomb - Tsukinowa Tomb

This is a circular tumulus with a projection, built on the top of a 220-meter-high hill in Ioka, Misaki-cho, Kume-gun, Okayama Prefecture. It is 60 meters in diameter and 6 meters high. There are three rows of cylindrical haniwa clay figures, and in the square section of the flat top of the tumulus, figurative haniwa figures of a house, shield, and short armor cover are arranged. The burial facility consists of two clay coffins containing split bamboo-shaped wooden coffins. An elderly man is buried in the central coffin, and a mirror, jewels, 80 bronze arrowheads, short armor, and other weapons, armor, farm implements, and many other tools are among the grave goods. An elderly woman is buried in the southern coffin, and a mirror, jewels, stone bracelets, combs, needles, and weapons are among the grave goods. There is also a clay coffin in the square protruding part, but no grave goods were found; only a boat-shaped clay product was excavated from above the coffin. This is a chieftain's tomb built in the early to first half of the 5th century, following the Ojichu and Ojikami tombs, and is followed by the Kamanoue tomb. It raises the issue of chieftain's tombs built for political regional groups and for each generation. Nearby is the "Tsuki no Wa Storage Facility," where excavated items are preserved and exhibited.
