…The annual events included New Year's worship to the Shoshidai and the East and West Magistrates, inauguration ceremonies, the payment of Bugin and the collection of town fees, while the monthly events included the transmission of notices to the towns and the collection of special fees and donations for the promotion of education. In the mid-Edo period, the Owariyoriai was also temporarily replaced by the accounts of the Chidayodai, but in 1817 (Bunka 14), the machigumi won the case against the machidai's tyranny in the Chidayo Kaigi Ikken the following year (Bunsei 1), and it was revived under the newly established unified self-government management organization of Kami-Gyo and Shimo-Gyo, the Oonaka. In addition to Kyoto, the machigumi as a united self-government organization of towns can be found in quite a few early modern cities that were formed and developed mainly under the Azuchi-Toyotomi government, such as Sakai, Omihachiman, and Otsu. …

…年行事は所司代，東西町奉行への年頭拝礼，就任拝礼，夫銀（ぶぎん）などの納入，町入費の徴収などを行い，月行事は町への触（ふれ）の伝達や臨時入費，勧化奉納金などの徴収などを行ったという。また〈大割寄合〉も，江戸中期には一時町代（ちようだい）の勘定にとってかわられたが，1817年(文化14)町代の専横を訴えた〈町代改儀一件〉で翌年(文政1)町組が勝訴すると，新設の上･下京の統一的自治運営機関〈大仲（おおなか）〉のもとで復活した。　なお，町の連合自治組織としての〈町組〉は，京都のほかにも堺，近江八幡，大津など，主として織豊政権下に形成･発達した近世都市に少なからず認められる。…
