gable

…In the main nave, rectangular quarter vaults are placed at each bay to unify the column system, and the arches of each vault are connected to small columns, which together form a large composite column that continues to the floor, creating a vertical line of force and a magnificent visual effect. With the tribune removed from the exterior, flying buttresses were used systematically for the first time as a necessary element of balance, with small pinnacles on each buttress and sharp triangular gables on the window arches, harmonizing with the overall upward-lifting effect.
