Serum

The collected blood will clot after a few minutes and turn bright red like agar. If left for a few hours or more, the clot will gradually shrink and become smaller lumps, with a transparent yellow liquid appearing around them. This is serum. Serum components are exactly the same as plasma components, excluding fibrinogen that precipitates during clotting. Therefore, its properties are almost identical to those of plasma. Today, anticoagulants (such as heparin) that prevent blood from clotting without changing the physiological properties of blood are widely used, so the collection of serum over a long period of time is almost limited to research related to immunity, etc. The appearance of serum can change depending on the condition of the disease, which is useful for diagnosis. The jaundice index measures the yellowish-brown color of serum.

採血した血液は数分後に凝固し、全体が真っ赤な寒天状となる。これを数時間以上放置すると、凝固塊はしだいに強く収縮して小さな塊になり、その周囲に透明な黄色の液が出てくる。これが血清である。血清成分は、血漿(けっしょう)成分のうち、凝固に際して析出したフィブリノゲンを除いたものと、まったく同じである。したがって、その性状も血漿とほぼ同一である。今日では、血液の生理的な性状をほとんど変えないで、その凝固を防ぐ抗凝固剤（ヘパリンなど）が盛んに用いられるようになったため、時間をかけて血清を求めることは、免疫などに関係した研究にほぼ限られている。血清の外観は病態によって変化することがあり、診断に役だつ。黄疸(おうだん)指数は、血清の黄褐色の色調を調べたものである。
