A village in Nishishirakawa District, southern Fukushima Prefecture. Population 5,128 (1995). Located in the southern Nakadori region, on the north bank of the upper reaches of the Abukuma River. The northeastern part is hilly with many forests and farmlands, while the southwestern and eastern parts are mostly flat and made up of rice paddies. Nametsu, in the center, was a key transportation hub connecting the Rikuu Kaido and Ibaraki Kaido roads. Until World War II, the area was one of the prefecture's leading horse-producing areas, but has since shifted to breeding Japanese beef cattle, pig farming, and chicken farming. In the mid-1960s, a field consolidation project was carried out, and the surplus labor force created by mechanization and labor-saving rice cultivation led to the thriving cultivation of vegetables such as cucumbers and tomatoes.
