A novel by British novelist L. Sterne. Published from 1759 to 1767. It is an unconventional novel consisting of nine volumes. The story is told by the title character Tristram, but he is born in the third volume. After that, the story does not revolve around him. The main topics are intellectual discussions between Tristram's father Walter and his friends, discussions between Tristram's uncle Toby and his servant Corporal Trim about fortification and mock battles, and opinions exchanged between Tristram's father, mother, and uncle about the upbringing of Tristram. In between, events and opinions about his birth, nose, and naming, the death of his brother Bobby and the reaction to it, and a story about Toby's old friend Le Fever are introduced. Volume 7 is a travelogue of France, and volumes 8 and 9 are about Toby's love affair with a widow in the neighborhood. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
