Japanese: 上山[市] - かみのやま

A city in the southeastern part of Yamagata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the Kaminoyama Basin and the surrounding mountainous areas, and has a castle town on the basin, and an urban area that developed as a post station where the two main roads, Ushu and Yonezawa, branch off. It is a hot spring city centered around Kaminoyama Onsen (a salt-containing gypsum spring, 61°C), and is a base for tourism in Zao, where the Ou Main Line and Zao Echo Line pass through. Oysters and Japanese paper are specialty products. Modern industries include silk reeling, food processing, and precision machining. There is the site of the Zen monk Takuan's Harusame-an and Tsukioka Park, the remains of the castle. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 240.93 ^km2 . 33,836 people (2010).

山形県南東部の市。1954年市制。上山盆地と周辺山地を占め，盆地上に城下町，羽州・米沢２街道の分岐する宿駅として発達した市街がある。上山温泉（含食塩石膏泉，61℃）を中心とする温泉都市で，奥羽本線，蔵王エコーラインが通じる蔵王観光の基地となっている。カキ，和紙を特産する。近代工業では製糸，食品加工，精密加工などが伸びている。禅僧沢庵の春雨庵跡，城跡月岡公園がある。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。240.93km²。３万3836人（2010）。
