Otori Shrine

Japanese:
Otori Shrine

Located in Senzoku-cho, Taito-ku, Tokyo. Commonly called "Otori-sama." It enshrines Amenohiwashi-no-mikoto and Yamato Takeru-no-mikoto. The date of its founding is unknown. According to the shrine's legend, it was founded when Emperor Keiko enshrined Amenohiwashi-no-mikoto here during the reign of Emperor Keiko. In the early modern period, it was located within the Nichiren sect's Chokoku-ji temple, but became independent in 1868 (Meiji 1) when Shinto and Buddhism were separated. Its annual festival, held on the day of the rooster in November, is a festival called Tori-no-ichi, comparable to Osaka's Toka Ebisu festival. On the night of the festival, shops selling lucky rakes line the grounds, and the temple is crowded with pilgrims, but it is also worshipped by merchants, especially those in the food and beverage industry.
