… The administrative divisions of the Viceroyalty were the direct territories, the governorates, and the governorates, and generally each of these divisions had an audiencia. Below them were the governorates (gobernación) and provinces (provincias), which were further divided into corregimientos and alcaldia mayors, and at the very bottom were towns governed by the municipal councils, called cabildos or ayuntamiens. However, in the second half of the 18th century, under the Bourbon rule, the corregimientos and alcaldia mayors were abolished as a result of the introduction of the intendencia system, which was intended to improve the efficiency of finances. …
