Currently, this is the common name for the tombs of past emperors and empresses that are identified by the Imperial Household Agency and maintained and managed by the state. According to the Imperial Household Law enacted in 1947 (Showa 22), "the tombs are the places where the emperor, empress, grand empress dowager, and empress dowager are buried, and the places where other members of the imperial family are buried are tombs." Including the reference sites, there are 900 imperial tombs nationwide, of which 240 are considered to be ancient tombs. Most of the ancient tombs were identified between the end of the Edo period and the Meiji period, and many of them require further investigation, as there are still tombs of emperors according to legend. In particular, 24 of the 30 large keyhole-shaped tombs are identified as imperial tombs, and are considered important as essential materials for research on the Kofun period and the establishment of the ancient state. However, the Imperial Household Agency does not recognize these as cultural assets, as they are the tombs of the emperors' ancestors, and archaeologists have not conducted excavation surveys. As a result, it is difficult to determine the age of the tumulus based on its internal structure and grave goods, let alone identify the person believed to be buried there. → Related topics Imperial property | Sho Tai | Haji clan | Mausoleum Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
