Zenhojun - Zenhojun

A leader of the Gabo Peasant War, fought in 1894-95 at the end of the Joseon Dynasty. A former low-ranking local official, he occupied Gobu County Office in Jeolla Province in February 1894 to avenge his father, who was killed in rebellion against the tyranny of the county governor, and to save the peasants who were suffering. Peasants from all over the country and Donghakdo followers, an ethnic religion, also rose up in revolt. Jeon announced four major principles, including a proclamation to support the state and safeguard the peace, to eradicate Western Japanese, and to destroy the nation's citizens, and fought against the government forces in various places, even occupying Jeonju at one point. The Joseon Dynasty government was shocked by this and offered peace to the peasant army and asked for assistance from China, and there was a temporary ceasefire, but the conflict of interest between Japan and China toward Korea intensified, and the Sino-Japanese War began at the end of July that year. Chun staged another uprising in Chungcheong Province in September, but was defeated by repression by Japanese and government forces. He was captured in Sunchang in December and executed in March of the following year.

朝鮮、李朝(りちょう)末の1894～95年に戦われた甲午(こうご)農民戦争の指導者。地方下級官吏の出身で、郡守の横暴に反抗して殺された父親の仇(あだ)を討ち、また塗炭の苦しみにある農民を救おうとして94年2月全羅道古阜郡衙(こふぐんが)を占領。各地の農民や民族宗教である東学道徒らもこれに呼応して蜂起(ほうき)した。全は輔国(ほこく)安民の布告文、逐滅洋倭(ようわ)、滅尽権貴などの四大綱領を発表し、各地で官軍と戦い、一時は全州を占領した。これに驚いた李朝政府は農民軍に和議を申し入れるとともに清(しん)国に援助を求め、一時休戦状態にあったが、朝鮮に向ける日清両国の利害対立が激化して、同年7月末、日清戦争が始まった。全は9月ふたたび忠清道で蜂起したが、日本軍と政府軍の弾圧で敗退し、12月淳昌で捕らえられて翌95年3月処刑された。
