1865‐1949 German geographer and explorer. Born in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad, Russia). Professor of geography and geophysics at the University of Berlin from 1899 to 1906. Professor of oceanography and polar research at the University of Munich until 1935. He explored Greenland in 1891 and 1892-93, and published a report on the expedition (2 volumes, 1897). In 1902, when Antarctic exploration became an international competition, Drygalski entered the Antarctic Ocean on the expedition ship Gauss with the support of the Imperial German government, and stopped at the Kerguelen Islands. He traveled south in search of land, reaching the coastline at 60°30′S, 90°E, and named Kaiser Wilhelm II Land (now near the Mirny base in Russia).
