An old town in the northeastern part of Tsushima, Kamiagata County, Nagasaki Prefecture. The main settlement is Hitakatsu, a coastal fishing base, which is serviced by boat from Hakata. Toyo and Waniura at the northern end are production areas for sea urchins and wakame seaweed. Shiitake mushroom cultivation is thriving. The Korean Peninsula can be seen from the town limits. In March 2004, it merged with Izuhara Town, Mitsushima Town, and Toyotama Town in Shimoagata County, Mine Town in Kamiagata County, and Kamiagata Town to form Tsushima City. 107.59 km2 . 5,168 people (2003). 長崎県上県(かみあがた)郡,対馬北東部の旧町。主集落は近海漁業基地の比田勝(ひたかつ)で,博多から船便がある。北端の豊(とよ),鰐浦(わにうら)はウニとワカメの産地。シイタケ栽培が盛ん。町域から朝鮮半島が望まれる。2004年3月下県郡厳原町,美津島町,豊玉町,上県郡峰町,上県町と合併し,対馬市となる。107.59km2。5168人(2003)。
