Born in the first year of the Katei era. Son of Utsunomiya Yasutsuna. Lord of Utsunomiya Castle in Shimotsuke (Tochigi Prefecture). Served as a personal attendant to the 6th Shogun, Prince Munetaka. After serving as a member of the Hikitsukeshu, he became a member of the Hyojoshu in Bun'ei 10. In the sixth year of the Koan era, he established the Utsunomiya Family Code. He excelled in waka poetry and kemari. He passed away on May 1, in the sixth year of the Einin era. He was 64 years old. He was commonly known as Shiro. His posthumous Buddhist name was Renyu.
