A volcano on the border between Nagano and Yamanashi prefectures. It is the highest peak of the Yatsugatake mountain range and occupies the southern end. It is 2,899m above sea level. It is the fourth highest volcano in Japan, and is a cone-shaped (→ stratovolcano) with vast bases to the east, west, and south. The summit has been eroded, but the original shape of the lava flows has been preserved on the mountainside. There are many alpine plants such as rhododendrons and tsuga diversifolia, and many climbers visit the mountain. It belongs to the Yatsugatake-Chushin Highlands Quasi-National Park. 長野・山梨県境にある火山。八ヶ岳連峰の最高峰で南端部を占める。標高 2899m。火山では日本第4位の高さで,コニーデ型 (→成層火山 ) を呈し,東,西,南の3方に広大な裾野を展開する。山頂部は浸食が進んでいるが,山腹は溶岩流の原形が保たれている。シャクナゲ,コメツガなど高山植物が豊富で,登山者も多い。八ヶ岳中信高原国定公園に属する。
