1856‐1904 A Chinese scholar and progressive official in the late Qing Dynasty. His courtesy name was Yige. He was from Pingxiang County, Jiangxi Province. He passed the Jinshi exam in the 16th year of the Guangxu era (1890) with the second highest score. His former tutors, the sisters Jinfei and Zhenfei, were favored by Emperor Guangxu, and he was highly valued by the emperor, and was promoted to a scholar of the Hanlin Academy. In 1895, when Kang Youwei, who aimed for a constitutional monarchy, established the Qiang Society, he supported it together with Weng Tonghe and Zhang Zhidong, which caused resentment among the conservatives, and he was dismissed from his post and exiled the following year.
