...Area: 15.1 km2. One island makes up Oshima Village, Kitamatsuura County, with a population of 2005 (1995). The island has a developed ria coastline, and has good ports such as Matoyama and Kounoura. Matoyama Port was known as a port of call for Japanese envoys to the Tang Dynasty. During the Edo Period, it was prosperous due to whaling, and since the Meiji Period, it has prospered due to sardine fishing, etc.
