An evergreen herb of the Araceae family with pinnate compound leaves, sometimes grown in greenhouses (illustration). It has a spherical tuber and thick root underground, is large, grows to 30-60 cm in height, and bears leaves with several pairs of leaflets at the base. The leaflets are oblong to ovate, leathery, and shiny. There is a joint at the base of the petiole, and the base is swollen beyond that. The flower stalk is short, 3-5 cm long, spherical at the base, and surrounded by a green, boat-shaped bract at the top, with a short, rod-shaped spadix. The base of the inflorescence is female and the top is male, but both have tepals, and the female flower has a two-lobed ovary with one ovule each.
