Tunisian politician. He joined the Dostoire Party at a young age. After studying in France, he formed the New Dostoire Party in 1934 and led the independence movement. He became prime minister at the same time as independence was achieved in 1956, became the first president after overthrowing the monarchy in 1957, and became president for life in 1975.
