A general trading company focusing on steel and machinery. Affiliated with the former Okura Zaibatsu. Founded in 1873 as Okuragumi Shokai, the company opened its London branch the following year in 1874, becoming the first overseas branch of a Japanese trading company. In 1911, the company was reorganized as a joint-stock company and established as Okuragumi, and in 1918, the trading division was separated and renamed Okura Shoji. In 1943, the company was renamed Okura Sangyo, and in 1946, Naigai Tsusho, before reverting to Okura Shoji in 1952. In 1964, the company absorbed Kishimoto Shoten and strengthened its steel division. In August 1998, due to a deterioration in management due to failed real estate development, the company filed for bankruptcy at the Tokyo District Court and was declared bankrupt.
