Hisatada Otaka

Conductor and composer. Born in Tokyo. He went to Europe in 1931 (Showa 6) while studying humanities at Seijo High School, and studied composition and conducting at the Vienna Conservatory. His graduation piece "Japanese Suite" in 1936 won the Weingartner Prize. He conducted in various parts of Europe before returning to Japan in 1940. From 1942, he worked as the principal conductor of the Japan Symphony Orchestra (the predecessor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra), while also composing, including Symphony No. 1, "Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra", and Flute Concerto. In 1952 (Showa 27), the "Otaka Prize" was established to commemorate his achievements and is given to Japanese composers. Conductor Otaka Tadaaki (1947- ) is his son.

指揮者、作曲家。東京生まれ。成城高等学校文科在学中の1931年(昭和6)に渡欧、ウィーン音楽院で作曲と指揮法を学び、36年の卒業作品『日本組曲』はワインガルトナー賞を受けた。ヨーロッパ各地で指揮して40年に帰国。42年から日本交響楽団(N響の前身)の常任指揮者として活躍するかたわら、作曲活動を行い、作品に、交響曲第1番、『ピアノと管弦楽のためのラプソディ』、フルート協奏曲など。52年(昭和27)功績を記念して日本人作曲家に与えられる「尾高賞」が設けられた。指揮者尾高忠明(ただあき)(1947― )は子息。
