Monthly Events - Gachigyouji

This was a position in which town members in Edo took turns in charge of town administration. The landlords and housekeepers within the town were selected in groups of five to take turns each month and carried out town administrative affairs at their own guardhouse. Later, as the number of housekeepers employed by landlords to manage land increased, they joined the town administration. Town officials (chodai) (later scribes) were placed as administrative assistants. For towns that could not be governed by the headman for some reason, a "monthly event manager" acted in his place. Their duties covered all aspects of town administration.

江戸の町構成員が交代で町政を担当した職務。町内の地主、家持(いえもち)が毎月交代で五人組ごとに選ばれ、自身番屋で町政事務を行った。のちには地主に雇われた地面管理人である家主(いえぬし)が増加したため、町政に加わった。事務補助者として町代(ちょうだい)（のち書役）が置かれた。事情があって名主(なぬし)の支配を受けない町は、「月行事持」として名主役を代行した。業務は町政全般に及んでいる。
