Tapir (English spelling)

Japanese: バク(獏) - バク（英語表記）tapir

A general term for four species of mammals belonging to the genus Tapir in the family Tapiridae of the order Perissodactyla. Three species, the Brazilian tapir ( Tapirus terrestris ), Baird's tapir (T. bairdi ), and mountain tapir (T. pinchaque ), are found in South America, Central America, and Mexico, while the Malayan tapir (T. indicus ) (illustration) is found in Myanmar, Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, and Sumatra. Body length is 180-250 cm, tail length is 5-10 cm, and weight is 225-300 kg. A primitive perissodactyl closely related to rhinoceros, with a long, slightly tube-shaped snout, it looks similar to a wild boar but is much larger and has thicker limbs.
