Genji Ogimachi

…During the Insei period after Emperor Shirakawa, up until the time of the retired Emperor Gotoba, most of the princes became monks and entered temples, so the practice of bestowing surnames was not practiced, and therefore the Genji clan did not arise. However, after the Kamakura period, the Juntoku Genji clan was established from the line of Emperor Juntoku's son, Prince Tadanari, followed by the Gosaga Genji clan, Kameyama Genji clan, and Gonijo Genji clan, and later the Ogimachi Genji clan (from Prince Tomohito, the grandson of the emperor). In this way, a great number of Genji clans were born with the surname bestowed over the course of history, and although it is almost impossible to know the exact total number, there is no doubt that the circumstances of their establishment suggest that the majority of the lineages were buried within aristocratic society. …
