1873‐1933 Hungarian psychoanalyst. One of S. Freud's earliest direct students. He obtained his medical degree in Vienna in 1894, and thereafter worked at Budapest's City Hospital, General Clinic, and Royal Court, among other places. Having examined prostitutes, he became interested in sexual psychology and psychoanalysis. He established the International Psychoanalytic Society in 1910, became professor of psychoanalysis at the University of Budapest in 1919 (the world's first university professor of psychoanalysis), founded the International Journal of Psychoanalysis (English version) in 1920, and spent eight months in the United States from 1926 to 1927, working to popularize psychoanalysis.
