Hungarian psychoanalyst. One of S. Freud's earliest direct students. He obtained his medical degree in Vienna in 1894, and thereafter worked at Budapest's City Hospital, General Clinic, and Royal Court, among other places. Having examined prostitutes, he became interested in sexual psychology and psychoanalysis. He established the International Psychoanalytic Society in 1910, became professor of psychoanalysis at the University of Budapest in 1919 (the world's first university professor of psychoanalysis), founded the International Journal of Psychoanalysis (English version) in 1920, and spent eight months in the United States from 1926 to 1927, working to popularize psychoanalysis.

ハンガリーの精神分析学者。初期からのS.フロイトの直弟子の一人。1894年ウィーンで医学の学位を得，以後ブダペストの市立病院，総合診療所，王立裁判所などで勤務，売春婦などを診察したこともあって性心理，精神分析に関心を向ける。1910年国際精神分析学会を設立，19年ブダペスト大学の精神分析学教授に就任(これは世界最初の精神分析学の大学教授であった)，20年《国際精神分析誌》(英語版)を創刊，26年から27年にかけて8ヵ月間アメリカに滞在して精神分析の普及に努めるなど大いに活躍した。
