A national holiday in the early Showa period. It was established to commemorate the virtues of Emperor Meiji and to commemorate the Meiji era. It was designated as the Emperor Meiji's birthday, November 3rd (Tencho-setsu). It is counted as one of the four major holidays (Shidaisetsu) along with Shihohai, Kigen-setsu, and Tencho-setsu, and on this day ceremonies and banquets are held at the Imperial Palace. It was abolished in 1948 (Showa 23) after the Second World War, but November 3rd is still celebrated today as "Culture Day."
