The Virgin Mary is said to have appeared on Tepejac Hill (a sacred place that had been dedicated to the Mother Goddess since before the conquest) northwest of Mexico City shortly after the Spanish conquest in 1531. Guadalupe is the name of one of the centers of the Virgin Mary worship in Spain. The worship first spread among the indigenous people, and gradually spread to the upper classes of the colony. Since Father Hidalgo, who started the War of Independence, used this image as a military flag, it has been inseparably linked to Mexican nationalism. Since 1945, the Pope has designated her as the patron saint of the Americas.

1531年スペインによる征服後間もないメキシコ市北西のテペジャクの丘（征服以前からの母神をまつった霊場）に出現したといわれる聖母。グアダルーペはスペインの聖母信仰の一中心地の地名。その信仰は初め先住民の間で広まり，しだいに植民地の上層部にも浸透した。独立戦争の口火を切ったイダルゴ神父がこの図像を軍旗にして以来，メキシコのナショナリズムと不可分に結び付いている。1945年からローマ教皇により南北アメリカの守護聖母とされた。
