The Virgin Mary is said to have appeared on Tepejac Hill (a sacred place that had been dedicated to the Mother Goddess since before the conquest) northwest of Mexico City shortly after the Spanish conquest in 1531. Guadalupe is the name of one of the centers of the Virgin Mary worship in Spain. The worship first spread among the indigenous people, and gradually spread to the upper classes of the colony. Since Father Hidalgo, who started the War of Independence, used this image as a military flag, it has been inseparably linked to Mexican nationalism. Since 1945, the Pope has designated her as the patron saint of the Americas. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
