Ookamenoki - Ookamenoki

Japanese:
Ookamenoki - Ookamenoki

A deciduous shrub of the Caprifoliaceae family (APG classification: Viburnum family). Also known as Musikari. There are various theories about the meaning of the name, and it is not well understood. It reaches a height of 7 to 8 meters, and the branches end in an inflorescence, which branches into pseudo-axillary branches. The winter buds have a pair of incompletely developed leaves, but they have not undergone the metamorphosis called bud scales. Small, stellate hairs like scales grow densely on the young branches and leaves. The inflorescence is a corymb, and the flowers around it are beautiful decorative flowers with large corollas, but they do not bear fruit. The flowers in the center of the inflorescence are bisexual. The flowers open in spring, and the corolla is white. The fruit is red at first, then black. The core has a deep groove on the ventral side. It is distributed in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Karafuto (Sakhalin), and parts of the Korean Peninsula, and is common in the upper temperate zone. Closely related species are known to exist in North America and China.
