…Fossil apes are classified as part of the Pongidae family of great apes, along with the modern great apes gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans, and are grouped together with the Gibbons and Hominidae in the superfamily Hominoidea. Based on the fossils known to date, it appears that the gibbon-lineage Pliopithecinae and the ape-lineage had already diverged by the middle Oligocene (about 30 million years ago). These latter fossil apes had diverged to some extent by the middle Miocene, and their characteristics had become quite distinct. …
