A perennial vine in the Asclepiadaceae family (APG classification: Apocynaceae). The leaves are triangular and long ovate, with a sharp tail at the tip and a heart-shaped base. In July, short flower stalks grow in the leaf axils, and small dark purple flowers with five petals grow sparsely. The fruits are narrowly lanceolate and thin, opening horizontally in pairs. They grow in fields and forest edges in hilly and mountainous areas, and are distributed in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The Acanthaceae genus has somewhat sparse flowers and upright pollen masses. There are 100 species distributed worldwide, of which 5 are found in Japan. [Hideo Takahashi June 21, 2021] Molecular phylogenetic analysis has led to the genus Leptolepis being identified with the genus Leptolepis.
