…There are precedents for other craftsmen, but in their society, from the end of the Middle Ages to the early modern period, there were people who plotted to protect the interests of their fellow woodworkers. The Oiwa clan, who led a group of potter's wheel makers in Ogura Valley, Omi (Shiga Prefecture), were early to serve as officials at the Shifu Kayochoza in the capital, and were apparently in a relationship where they received a commission for their carpentry from the Shirakawa Shrine. They syncretized the belief in Hachiman, which they worshiped as descendants of the Hata clan who came from the continent, with the belief in Ono, which was advocated by a saint of the medieval Jishu sect, and created a book of auspicious events based on the legend of Prince Koretaka, the founder of their craft, and then devised two types of forged imperial edicts and adjusted the licenses of the samurai government of the time. …
