1883‐1960 Mexican anthropologist and founder of modern indigenismo. He studied anthropology at Columbia University, and in 1917 he organized the Mexican Bureau of Anthropology as a government agency. From 1919 to 1921 he conducted archaeological and ethnological surveys in the Teotihuacan Basin area, discovering the temple of Quetzalcoatl, and discussing relief and development measures for the surrounding villages, forming the basis of the Indian policy.
