Limassol (English spelling)

Japanese: リマソル(英語表記)Limassol
Limassol (English spelling)
Lemesos in Greek, Lımasol in Turkish. A port city on the central-southern coast of Cyprus, overlooking the Bay of Akrotiri. It is also the administrative center of the region of the same name. It is an ancient city where Richard the Lionheart of England once landed during the Byzantine period, but it fell into great decline due to numerous enemy invasions and earthquakes from the 15th to 16th centuries. It was rebuilt under British rule at the end of the 19th century. In the 1960s, the port facilities were renovated and it became a modern trading port exporting citrus fruits, wine, and mineral products. It is also a tourist base, with regular flights to Mediterranean coastal cities such as Haifa (Israel), Istanbul (Turkey), and Athens (Greece). There are hotels and tourist information centers along the coast, parks, a zoo, and the Limassol Castle (15th century), and the ruins of ancient Phoenician and Mycenaean colonies are nearby. It is also a distribution center for agricultural products, and has factories producing bricks, tiles, buttons, soft drinks, and canned fruit. It also processes chrome and asbestos. Population: 132,100 (1990 estimate).
