...Romantic painting finds its most moving expression in the landscapes and portraits of the two northern painters Friedrich and Runge. In the second half of the 19th century, Menzel's realism appears, but from this time German painting was strongly influenced by foreign countries. Karl von Piloty (1826-1886) and Spitzweg were influenced by French art, Feuerbach and Marey by Italian plastic art, and Liebermann and Corinth brought about a diversification of style in the vein of impressionism. In 1905, the same year that Fauvism appeared in Paris, the group Brücke (Bridge), organized by Heckel and Kirchner in Dresden, was the starting point of modern German painting, along with the group Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider), founded in Munich by Kandinsky and Marc in 1911.
