The phenomenon in which different (or the same) single crystals grow on a certain crystal plane with the same crystal orientation. It also refers to the technology of growing such single crystal thin films on semiconductor crystal substrates. It is often seen in natural minerals such as quartz grown on calcite, but it is important as a material technology for semiconductors, especially for forming junctions between semiconductors and between metals and semiconductors. Depending on whether the crystal growth is performed in the liquid phase or the gas phase, it is called liquid phase epitaxy or gas phase epitaxy. In recent years, the technology of vapor deposition by ejecting atoms or molecules into a high vacuum has developed significantly, and technologies such as molecular beam epitaxy, which supplies material as molecular beams, and atomic layer epitaxy, which controls crystal growth one atomic layer at a time, have also been developed.

一定の結晶面上に，別種（または同種）の単結晶が結晶方位を揃えて成長していく現象。あるいは，半導体結晶基板上などに，そうした単結晶薄膜を成長させる技術をいう。方解石上に成長した水晶など天然の鉱物でも数多く見られるが，半導体などの材料技術として，特に半導体間の接合，金属と半導体間の接合などを形成するのに重要。結晶成長を液相で行わせるか気相で行わせるかによって，液相エピタキシー，気相エピタキシーなどと呼ばれる。また，近年は高真空中に原子や分子を飛ばせて蒸着させる技術が著しく発展し，分子線として材料物質を供給する分子線エピタキシーや，一原子層ずつ結晶成長を制御する原子層エピタキシーの技術も開発されている。
