The phenomenon in which different (or the same) single crystals grow on a certain crystal plane with the same crystal orientation. It also refers to the technology of growing such single crystal thin films on semiconductor crystal substrates. It is often seen in natural minerals such as quartz grown on calcite, but it is important as a material technology for semiconductors, especially for forming junctions between semiconductors and between metals and semiconductors. Depending on whether the crystal growth is performed in the liquid phase or the gas phase, it is called liquid phase epitaxy or gas phase epitaxy.
