Beguines - Beguinage (English spelling)

Japanese: ベギン会 - ベギンかい（英語表記）Beguines

A semi-monastic order of women that originated in the Middle Ages. They did not require the same vows as monastic orders, but had strict rules of communal living and idealized a quiet monastic life of mystical meditation. The virgin or widowed members lived in a secluded monastery (hof) under a leader. However, their personal property remained theirs and was not incorporated into the common property, and they could marry by leaving the order. The corresponding male group was the Beghards, but they were not as powerful as the Beguines.

中世に起源をもつ，女性による半修道会的集団。修道会のような入会誓約は課されないが，厳格な共同生活規約をもち，神秘的な瞑想による静穏な修道生活を理想とし，首導者のもとに，処女または寡婦の会員たちは，隔絶された会院hof内で起居した。ただし，個人的財産は所有されたままで，共同財産に組みこまれず，また脱会によって結婚することもできた。対応する男性の集団は，ベガルド会Beghardsであるが，ベギン会ほどに有力ではなかった。
