A semi-monastic order of women that originated in the Middle Ages. They did not require the same vows as monastic orders, but had strict rules of communal living and idealized a quiet monastic life of mystical meditation. The virgin or widowed members lived in a secluded monastery (hof) under a leader. However, their personal property remained theirs and was not incorporated into the common property, and they could marry by leaving the order. The corresponding male group was the Beghards, but they were not as powerful as the Beguines. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
